Ivy Tech Community College Names Lewis Eakins as Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College has named Lewis Eakins, PhD, as vice president for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (PSEP), effective July 1, 2021. Eakins currently serves as the chief security officer and director of Public Safety at Idaho State University with campuses located in Boise, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and the main campus in Pocatello.

Eakins has more than 35 years of law enforcement, security consulting, and emergency management experience. He was formerly the Chief of Police at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala.; and a captain with the METRO Transit Police in Houston, Texas.

“I am excited for this opportunity to serve the students, faculty, and staff at Ivy Tech Community College,” said Eakins. “I look forward to building strong partnerships across the campuses to foster a collaborative approach to public safety and emergency preparedness.”

Eakins has undergraduate degrees in Police Science and Criminal Justice, a Master’s degree in Security Management, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration with a concentration in Homeland Security Policy and Coordination. He is a 2015 graduate of FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy (Cohort III).

Eakins is currently a board member with the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) for the Mountain Pacific Region. Since 2017, he has conducted training on the topics of emergency operations planning and threat assessments for the U.S. Department of Education through the REMS TA Center; and he has trained in the areas of gender-based bias and trauma informed investigations for the U.S. Department of Justice through its Technical Training Institute.
