Ivy Tech Community College sets record in dual credit numbers once again

Serves approximately 58,000 students in 2016-17; resulting in nearly $50 million in college tuition savings

Ivy Tech Community College continues to see growth in its dual credit program serving approximately 58,000 students in 2016-17.  The record number of students are on pace to earn an estimated 365,250 college credits, which could save families nearly $50 million in college tuition costs. Ivy Tech serves 95 percent of traditional public high schools participating statewide in its dual credit program, which is free to students, the only no-cost option in the state.

Overall, 434 high schools/career centers, including public, non-public and charter, have dual credit agreements with Ivy Tech, offering more than 1,300 courses and 6,100 sections statewide.

“We are proud to offer dual credit courses throughout the state. It is an effective way to get more students on a post-secondary track and helps them experience success in college while still in high school,” Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann said. “We are pleased to see the expansion of our career-focused course offerings and the development of intentional dual credit pathways. These pathways result in high school students earning workforce relevant credentials and/or transfer general education core certificates at the same time they receive their high school diploma, saving substantial time and money for tens of thousands Hoosiers.”

Career Technical Education saw an eight percent increase in the number of courses, with the most frequently offered courses in Agriculture and Manufacturing Production and Operations. Core Transfer Library/Liberal Arts dual credit agreements saw a five percent increase in the number of courses offered since last academic year, with the most frequently offered courses in English, Math, Spanish and Business.

Ivy Tech has also seen increased Transfer General Education Certificate pathways being developed at high schools throughout the state, as hundreds of students are on a pathway to graduate high school with a year of college credits already earned valued at $25,000 including tuition, books, room and board at a public university.
