INDIANAPOLIS – Ivy Tech Community College has been named an Authorized Android™ Training Center. The College is one of the only institutions in the United States to have this designation.
As an authorized training center, Ivy Tech will be offering a course this fall in Mobile Application Development as part of its Software Development program, which can now lead to a certification as an Android Developer. Students will be able to take the certification as an option over the next year and the certification preparation will be offered as part of the Software Development curriculum in 2018-2019.
“The significance of this designation is huge for Ivy Tech Community College,” said Matt Etchison, vice president for information technology at Ivy Tech Community College. “This is another way our information technology programs are staying on the cutting-edge and preparing students for today’s IT industry.”
There are close to 1,000 average annual job openings in software development in Indiana, according to the 2014-2024 DWD/BLS Occupational Demand Report. Android application development is among the most required skills in the IT sector and in the available IT jobs. Businesses have been migrating from websites to mobile applications and the Android operating system dominates the smartphone industry. According to Strategy Analytics, in the third quarter of 2016, Android managed to capture a record 88% of the global market.
The mobile application development course uses online virtual teleprescence instruction, so students can complete the certification from any location. As an Android authorized exam center, students can sit for all Android ATC exams onsite. Other developers who haven’t attended the courses may also sit for exams at the College.
