Alumnus Corey Reason plays pivotal role at HSBC
As we have become more dependent upon technology, we have also become more susceptible to risk. Accordingly, in industries where the stakes are extremely high, such as banking, there’s a growing need for professionals who can protect us and our assets.
That’s where Ivy Tech Community College alumnus Corey Reason comes in. Reason, a 2006 Ivy Tech graduate and native of Yorktown, Indiana, serves as vice president and intelligence coordinator for the Financial Intelligence Unit of HSBC Bank USA. HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations, serving more than 58 million customers. Reason says that while his job is complex, it comes down to one simple mission: protecting the bank and the assets entrusted to it.
“In my role, I am the single point of contact for intelligence gathering within the bank – internal stakeholders such as the global lines of business and the local compliance officers – as well as peer banks and government,” says Reason. “Our goal is to build a first-in-class intelligence program, allowing us to see new and emerging risk patterns and build that into our program.”
Reason now works in New York, but he hasn’t forgotten where it all began. In fact, he says he wouldn’t be where he is today without the head start Ivy Tech gave him.
“Ivy Tech helped me build my business skills and understand how to apply those skills in the workplace,” Reason says. “I think Ivy Tech is a fantastic place for people to build the foundation of their education.“
He adds that the extracurricular activities he participated in at Ivy Tech gave him experience in working with others from a wide variety of backgrounds.
“One of my favorite memories from my time at Ivy Tech was being involved in student government,” says Reason. “It showed me the diversity of students across the different sites, which helped me immensely as I now work for one of the most diverse global companies.”
Reason also credits Ivy Tech with helping him land his first job, a position in the Legal and Compliance office of First Merchants Bank in Muncie. His responsibilities included working with the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering efforts. That work gave him a passion for what he does and encouraged him to make it a career.
Today, Reason supplements his work at HSBC by serving as a member of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He’s also continuing his education, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration, which he hopes to complete next year.
Now, as he’s in a position to influence others, Reason says he would encourage those just starting out to strongly consider enrolling at Ivy Tech.
“Whether you are looking for an associate degree or taking the first step of many in your educational plan,” Reason states, “the flexibility of scheduling and depth of the faculty’s knowledge make it easy to recommend Ivy Tech to others.”
