NORTHEAST – Ivy Tech Community College−Northeast recently announced the start-up of its simulation lab. The simulation lab will provide an additional experience to the various clinical rotations throughout the nursing program for both the Practical (PN) Nursing and the Registered (ASN) Nursing student.
The simulation lab, located on Ivy Tech’s Coliseum Campus, is set up to imitate a hospital nursing unit and patient room. It features one adult Sim patient, a female manikin with a birthing bed and baby crib, a child manikin and a partial manikin that provides breath and heart sounds. It also houses a computer nursing station for the student to receive report and document patient data, a medication cart, a desk for the instructor running the simulation and a de-briefing area.
“This hands-on type of learning experience is based on nursing research that confirms the necessity of exposure to simulated patient situations for students that require clear, precise nursing judgment during the educational process,” said Pamela Lange, assistant professor in the School of Nursing. “Ivy Tech’s School of Nursing views this simulation experience as integral to the learning process, in addition to the clinical requirements of the different nursing courses.”
Nursing faculty include one to two simulation scenarios within their clinical groups, depending on the time frame for each clinical. There will be four to five clinical courses using the simulation lab during the semester. Each clinical group consists of up to 10 students; so anywhere from 100 to 150 students will benefit from this lab each semester. These numbers may increase as progression is made in the simulation lab area.
“Our student feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive and they keep asking for more,” Lange said. “I think this encounter helps relieve some of the anxiety and stress that nursing students find themselves experiencing when dealing with ‘live’ patients on the clinical site and gives them more confidence in their abilities and points to areas needing additional guidance.”
The simulation lab is located at Ivy Tech’s Coliseum Campus (3800 N. Anthony Blvd.) in Room CC1302.
