NORTHEAST – Ivy Tech Community College−Northeast is honoring Domestic Violence Awareness Month through a series of events on campus during October. The events kick off Oct. 4 with a Chalk it Up event at the Ivy Tech Coliseum Campus. Oct. 11 and Oct. 20 will feature screenings of “Sin by Silence,” a story of women in prisons who experienced domestic abuse. The events wrap up Oct. 26, with the Service Provider Fair, 5:30 to 7 p.m., and the Domestic Violence Survivors’ Celebration, 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Coliseum Campus Auditorium. The fair will bring awareness to domestic violence and the following celebration will honor the lives of domestic violence survivors.
“The celebration helps encourage participants to celebrate that they have had the courage and strength to survive or help others survive the effects of domestic violence,” said Chris Garrett, Department of Labor grant coordinator. “Several domestic violence survivors were appreciative of the event and what it has brought to the college and communities.”
Last year, through domestic violence awareness efforts, information was distributed throughout the campus. Students, staff, faculty, community agencies and community citizens were able to better understand how to identify when they are victims/batterers or know victim/batterers and the resources available to them.
“I am always honored when asked to tell my survivor story, but my goal is never to dwell on the domestic violence,” said Sherry Sausaman of the Whitley County Domestic Violence Task Force. “My goal is for others to hear that one can choose to remain a victim or choose to become a survivor. I hope to inspire survival to the magnitude of offering a helping hand to other victims.”
