INDIANAPOLIS – Ivy Tech Community College awarded more than $6.6 million in student scholarships to more than 10,000 students during the 2010-2011 school year.
Nearly $4.5 million in scholarships were awarded by the college to roughly 7,500 students, while $2.1 million were awarded through the Ivy Tech Foundation to more than 3,000 students.
The majority of the $4.5 million in scholarships awarded by the college are need-based and related to a students’ income and eligibility. Scholarships are very important to Ivy Tech’s student population, considering the median income of the average Ivy Tech student filing independently for financial aid is just under $20,000 a year.
Scholarships awarded through the Ivy Tech Foundation are provided by donors of the college, including both individuals and businesses. These scholarships are awarded in the fall, spring and summer and range from $250 a year to more than $3,000 a year.
Some scholarships are designated for specific degree programs while others ask only that students be in any degree program at Ivy Tech. Scholarship recipients are selected by a scholarship committee comprised of faculty and staff at Ivy Tech.
“Although tuition at Ivy Tech is the lowest in the state, higher education is a big investment. By providing our students these much-needed scholarships we are providing them greater access to obtain the skills and degrees needed to compete in today’s workforce,” said Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder. “Cost is a barrier to many students when it comes to completing their degree, and we are very fortunate to have the resources and donors to help remove those barriers.”
Current students and anyone who would like to attend Ivy Tech can learn more about these scholarships on the college’s web-site at http://www.ivytech.edu/financial-aid/scholarships.html.
