Ivy Tech, IUPUI Unveil New Transfer Agreement

INDIANAPOLIS – A new initiative will enable Ivy Tech students who transfer to IUPUI before completing an associate degree to still earn that important academic credential, officials from both institutions announced today.

Under the new initiative, called AB4B (Associate Before Bachelor’s), the classes these former Ivy Tech students take at IUPUI while pursuing their bachelor degree will count toward the associate degree they would otherwise have earned at Ivy Tech.

Ivy Tech has aggressively pursued agreements with four-year colleges and universities that enable their graduates with associate degrees who want to do so to transfer to an institution like IUPUI in order to earn a bachelor’s. But some Ivy Tech students transfer before completing their associate degrees. While the credits they’ve earned at Ivy Tech transfer, they forego the associate degree in the process.

Now they won’t have to under one of the first agreements of its kind.

That’s important says, Dr. Mary Ostrye, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Ivy Tech. “Should life get in the way, as it can for many college students, we want to ensure they receive their associate degree. There are thousands of jobs that require an associate degree, and we want to ensure they do not lose out on this valuable credential while working towards completion of a bachelor’s degree.”

“It’s another example of Ivy Tech and IUPUI working together in the best interest of Ivy Tech students who transfer to IUPUI to obtain a bachelor’s degree,” said Amanda Helman, director of the Office of IUPUI & Ivy Tech Coordinated Programs at IUPUI. “Students with an associate degree will have a higher employability and increased credential to combine with their bachelor’s degree from IUPUI.”

With the new program, IUPUI will run a list each fall semester of IUPUI undergraduate students who have 45 or more transfer hours from Ivy Tech. A degree audit will then be run for each student that will show how many hours the student will need to complete at IUPUI in order to earn an associate degree in General Studies from Ivy Tech.

Each student will then be sent a copy of the degree audit with a letter from the Office of Coordinated programs explaining the program, the benefits of completing the Ivy Tech degree, contact information for the Program Chair of General Studies at Ivy Tech, and procedures on how to transfer IUPUI credits to Ivy Tech.
