COLUMBUS – Janet Burton, Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus medical-surgical nursing instructor, has published an article in the September/October 2010 issue of MedSurg Matters!, the official newsletter of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses.
The article, titled “Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome,” summarizes the effects of alcohol withdrawal on the body and how to manage the patient with alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Approximately 500,000 people each year require hospitalization from severe alcohol withdrawal, according to Burton. The use of a withdrawal assessment scale for the management of this problem is presented in the article.
