INDIANAPOLIS – Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) have partnered to offer free training for individuals who are interested in becoming contractors for the state’s Home Energy Conservation Program.
The goal of this training is to provide contractors throughout the state of Indiana with the skills necessary to apply advanced weatherization and energy conservation techniques to a variety of homes. Only those trained through the IHCDA-approved program will be eligible for work with the Home Energy Conservation Program providers.
“We are very pleased to be the training provider for this valuable program,” said Susan Brooks, Sr. Vice President for Ivy Tech’s Department of Workforce Development. “Not only are we preparing more Hoosier workers for additional job opportunities, but we are helping Indiana citizens become more energy conscious, which in the long run will save them money on heating and cooling expenses in their homes.”
Contractors who complete the training will be responsible for completing energy-saving home repairs and improvements as determined by individual energy audits.
“Job creation has been at the heart of our plan for the federal stimulus money,” said Sherry Seiwert, Executive Director of IHCDA. “This partnership with Ivy Tech offers an accessible opportunity for Hoosiers who are interested in receiving this training, in locations all around the state.”
The training is open to employees of contractors, independent contractors and staff of state-selected Home Energy Conservation service providers at no cost. Previous construction or HVAC experience is required. The training, which began last month, has already prepared more than 200 individuals for work in this field.
The training will be offered at the following Ivy Tech locations: Columbus, Elkhart, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Richmond, Sellersburg, Terre Haute and Valparaiso. Individuals interested in the training should visit www.ivytech.edu/weatherization or call IHCDA at 317-232-7777. Classes will fill up quickly.
